Education Specification
Specifying the vision not just the spaces
When schools are being rebuilt they are often called upon to produce an Output Specification. The technical and formulaic nature of this document means that spatial requirements are often set out in a prescriptive way that is not strongly grounded in pedagogy and that saps architects’ opportunities to be creative. Recognising this problem, Bryanston Square has devised an Education Specification, which turns the process on its head. Following the premise that activities should drive spaces (rather than spaces driving activities), the Education Specification outlines a school’s educational objectives, ethos and planned activities in order to drive spatial requirements and inform design proposals.
The succinct and illustrated final document is invaluable in communicating to architects what a school is all about, making it easier to develop the best solutions for it. The process schools goes through in order to produce the document, however, is also extremely valuable in ensuring that they test and understand their requests and are able to articulate them using a common design language.
Bryanston Square leads schools and authorities through the whole process with a series of tools and interventions such as Immersion Days, Socrates’ Tree, stakeholder workshops and an Education Specification workbook of questions and exercises. |
