In the News:
Raising aspiration in young people

Students in Southwark showed us just how good they are at presenting by feeding back to their peers after attending an Immersion day with us last week. Though they were a little nervous at first, they worked together as a team to create an informative piece to be presented back to their classmates. They included video clips and images that they had shot on the day to bring their 30 minute presentation to life…well done team!
This work is part of a new programme called Unlock which is about sharing ideas and experiences, thinking outside the box and showing young people that there is a wealth of opportunities out there for them.
We have found that too many young people have low aspirations and do not realise the wealth of opportunities available to them. Added to this, these opportunities are sometimes outside the usual frame of reference for many teachers and careers advisors so they may therefore not be best equipped to offer support and guidance to students in the best way to access them.
Ultimately, Unlock is designed to enable young people to investigate options by asking the right questions and taking control of their own futures. It can take the form of a single day of ‘Immersion’ or can be part of a wider programme including kick-off sessions and workshops. We want to raise the aspirations of young people as well as providing quality CPD for teachers.
Our aim is that the very nature Unlock will enable the programme to become sustainable - equipping young people with the skills to develop their own professional networks and ability to organise events.

In the morning Marcus will be working with the Bexley Headteachers on 'building vision for an uncertain educational future'. In the afternoon he is presenting 'Dare to Dream' at the IAA conference in London and earlier in the day, we are running a Seminar/Workshop.

24/2/2012

Marcus has been invited to the University of Hertfordshire to give a keynote presentation at a conference for children going to school in St. Albans and Harpenden . The focus will be “Leaders of the Future” and the students will be drawn from the student councils or student voices of all the local secondary schools in the two areas.

Following the keynote speech there will be an afternoon of workshops run by the students, showcasing the areas of school life their student councils have led on and influenced over the last year.

We are holding a Seminar on Rebuilding and Refurbishing public spaces such as schools and libraries, running from 1630-1900.

The remodel and refurbishment themed events will discuss changing existing spaces ranging from remodelling a classroom to converting an office building to a school or vice versa.

We have invited some of the contracting organisations involved, people from schools and Diocese so that we can identify any procurement issues that might arise and discuss in open forum, sharing knowledge and ideas freely.

You can hear it from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

As part of the Unlock programme we are running with St Michael’s Catholic School in Southwark, the students have organised an event showcasing what they have been doing so far in the project. They have invited interesting people that they have met along the way back to St Michael’s to share their stories with the audience in a workshop format. It’s shaping up to be a great event, if you’re interested in coming along please let us know and we’ll see if we can get you a ticket.

Marcus will be delivering a keynote session at the Cornwall Learning Conference focusing on aspiration and motivation, looking at all of the possibilities in one’s life, and the facilitators and barriers to getting there. “When I was young, I had so many dreams, so many possibilities – then I realised that they were just that, dreams” is all too often used as a reason for not pushing forward. But life does not have to be like that. In this seminar, Marcus will lead participants through a journey of self discovery. At the end, we hope they will be in a better place to help students and colleagues, and will rediscover why they went into education in the first place.

15/3/2012

We have invited some of the contracting organisations involved, people from schools and Diocese so that we can identify any procurement issues that might arise and discuss in open forum, sharing knowledge and ideas freely.
